History

Designed by native Genoese starchitect Renzo Piano, the Aquarium opened in 1992 as the centerpiece of the Genoa Expo '92, celebrating the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas. Piano designed the main building to mimic a giant cargo ship launching into the Mediterranean, seamlessly connecting the historic port with modern architecture. In 2013, the facility added the Cetacean Pavilion, a state-of-the-art glass-walled enclosure designed by Piano that allows visitors to observe dolphins from both above and below the water surface. The aquarium plays a major international role in marine conservation, aquatic biology research, and the rehabilitation of injured Mediterranean sea turtles.
