Genoa’s identity is bound to the sea, and there is no better place to experience it than Galata Museo del Mare—the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. Walk through full-scale reconstructions of 17th-century wooden galleys, experience interactive ocean storm simulators, and then step right outside onto the docks to climb inside the Nazario Sauro—a real decommissioned Italian Navy submarine floating in the water!
The museum occupies the historic Galata building inside Porto Antico, which served as Genoa's naval arsenal during the Middle Ages and Renaissance where war galleys were constructed for the Republic's navy. Opened in 2004 when Genoa was designated the European Capital of Culture, the museum offers four floors of immersive history, including Christopher Columbus's original charts and an emotional gallery dedicated to transatlantic Italian emigration. Docked directly outside in the harbor basin sits the Nazario Sauro (S 518), a 210-foot diesel-electric submarine built in 1976. Decommissioned by the Italian Navy in 2002, it was transformed into a floating exhibit in 2010 and remains the only submarine in Italy that visitors can explore while it is actively afloat in seawater.
