Palazzo Ambrogio Di Negro

As you dive back into the narrow, winding alleys (caruggi), look up to spot Palazzo Ambrogio Di Negro. This is a masterclass in how wealthy Genoese merchants optimized tight medieval spaces. The facade features delicate, fading frescoes—a signature trait of Genoa during its golden era as the "Painted City."

History

Erected between 1569 and 1572 by Ambrogio Di Negro—a doge of Genoa and prominent international banker—this palace reflects the high financial standing of the Di Negro family. Because the surrounding medieval street grid (caruggi) left no space for grand front lawns or sweeping driveways, Genoese aristocrats adapted by hiring renowned Mannerist painters to turn the outside walls of their homes into gigantic canvases. Covered in intricate decorative motifs, mythological scenes, and trompe-l'œil architectural elements, buildings like this earned Genoa the nickname La Superba and La Città Dipinta (The Painted City) among European grand tour travelers.
