History

Palazzo Ducale originated in the late 13th century (around 1298) when Genoa was consolidating its maritime dominance across the Mediterranean. Following a devastating fire in 1577, architect Andrea Cerisola redesigned the palace in grand Mannerist style, creating majestic courtyards, state halls, and a high defense tower (Torre Grimaldina) which served as a political prison. The palace was the official residence of the Doge (the elected ruler of Genoa) until 1797, when Napoleon Bonaparte dissolved the Republic. The large square outside, Piazza De Ferrari, was transformed in the 1930s into Genoa's financial hub, flanked by neo-baroque banks and anchored by its iconic central bronze fountain designed by Giuseppe Crosa di Vergagni in 1936.
