You are standing in the shadow of Porta Soprana, the soaring medieval gatehouse that once served as Genoa's main eastern entry. With its two massive stone towers, this was the grandest gate in the 12th-century city defense walls. Just a few steps past the arches lies the small reconstructed stone house where a young Christopher Columbus grew up.
Constructed in 1155, Porta Soprana and the surrounding Barbarossa Walls were erected in an extraordinary feat of civic mobilization—completed in under 50 days by thousands of Genoese citizens working around the clock. The city was driven by urgent fear of an impending invasion by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa). Above the archway, carved Latin inscriptions warn entering travelers: "If you bring peace, you may enter; if you bring war, you will fall." During the 15th century, Domenico Colombo—a wool weaver, tavern keeper, and gate warden—lived in a house right outside this gate with his young son, Christopher Columbus, who spent his formative years playing under these very stone towers before setting sail for the unknown.
