History

Palazzo Rosso was constructed between 1671 and 1677 by architect Pietro Antonio Corradi for the brothers Ridolfo and Gio. Francesco Brignole Sale. For over two centuries, the Brignole Sale dynasty continuously embellished the interiors with opulent baroque ceilings, gilded mirrors, and an unrivaled private art collection. In 1874, Maria Brignole Sale, Duchess of Galliera and the last heir of the family, made an extraordinary philanthropic gesture: she donated the entire palace, along with its priceless art collection and historical furnishings, to the City of Genoa. Her explicit request was that the collection remain intact and permanently accessible to the public, turning a private aristocratic mansion into one of Italy's greatest municipal art museums.
