The Aquarium of Genoa is the star attraction of Porto Antico and one of the projects that reshaped the waterfront in 1992. Renzo Piano's harbor architecture keeps the building low against the water, while the visitor route moves through large marine habitats and later additions such as the Cetacean Pavilion. It is the one Genoa sight that can easily consume half a day.
The Aquarium opened in 1992 during the celebrations connected with the 500th anniversary of Columbus's Atlantic voyage. It became the flagship attraction of the wider Porto Antico redevelopment, which helped turn former port infrastructure into a public waterfront.
Architect Renzo Piano shaped the building to sit low on the old pier rather than block the city from the sea. The internal exhibition concept was developed with aquarium specialist Peter Chermayeff. A later Cetacean Pavilion, also connected with Renzo Piano's design work, expanded the experience.
