History
The Sat-kula on Petrovaradin fortress was built in 1690 by the Habsburgs to be visible to boatmen on the Danube far below. Because the tower is set on the bluff and the hours mattered more than the minutes for river traffic, its makers famously reversed the hands: the long, thick hand shows hours; the short, thin hand shows minutes.
The clock still uses a manual mechanism — a caretaker climbs the tower every ten days to wind it. In summer the black-painted metal expands and the clock slows by a couple of minutes a day; in winter it gains time. Locals say Petrovaradin is the only place where the clock lies with the seasons.
The terrace next to the tower is the most Instagrammed spot in Novi Sad. Come at sunset with the city behind you.
