Novi Sad · Landmark
The grand baroque heart of Novi Sad, framed by the neo-Gothic Name of Mary Church and the Habsburg-era City Hall.
Trg slobode has been the central meeting point of Novi Sad since the 18th century, when the town developed around what was then called Main Square. The current shape dates from the 1890s, after a great fire cleared the way for the neo-Gothic cathedral and Franz Neuhausen's new City Hall on the opposite side.
At the centre stands a monument to Svetozar Miletić, the mayor and Serbian politician who fought for the city's autonomy under Austria-Hungary; the statue by Ivan Meštrović was erected in 1939. Under socialism the square was pedestrianised and turned into the outdoor living room it is today — the annual Christmas market, EXIT-week openings and every civic gathering happens here.
Sit on the church steps at golden hour: the low sun paints the whole square amber, and you get both landmarks in one frame.
