Novi Sad · Landmark
The oldest Serbian cultural and scientific institution, and one of the city's most photographed classicist facades.
Founded in Pest in 1826 and moved to Novi Sad in 1864, Matica srpska is the mother institution of Serbian culture — a mix of learned society, publisher, library and gallery. It gave the city its nickname "the Serbian Athens" during the 19th century.
The current building on Trg Marije Trandafil is a strict neoclassical block from 1912, designed by Momčilo Tapavica. The library alone holds more than three million items; the Gallery next door (Galerija Matice srpske) has a permanent collection of Serbian art from the 18th century onward and is a bargain visit at ~200 RSD.
Even if you don't go in, the ensemble around Trandafil Square is one of the quietest, most graceful corners of the old town.
