History

The current Name of Mary Church (Crkva Imena Marijinog) replaces a modest baroque church destroyed in the 1849 bombardment of Novi Sad by Habsburg forces stationed in Petrovaradin. Designed by György Molnár in the Hungarian neo-Gothic style, it was consecrated in 1895.

The 72-metre spire is the tallest structure in the old town and the reason you keep seeing the church from every side street. Inside, the roof is covered in glazed Zsolnay tiles from Pécs — the same factory that clad the Matthias Church in Budapest — and the altar features carvings by Tyrolean master Ferdinand Stuflesser.

Locals simply call it Katedrala. Mass is held daily; slip in during a service if you want to hear the organ.
