History

Built by the Habsburgs between 1692 and 1780 on the rocky bluff above the Danube, Petrovaradinska tvrđava was one of the largest fortifications in Europe — and never taken in a siege. Its Baroque star-shaped ramparts and four levels of underground galleries earned it the nickname the Gibraltar of the Danube.

Today the upper fortress hosts the City Museum of Novi Sad, artist studios in the old barracks, a planetarium, several restaurants and — every July — the EXIT festival, one of Europe's biggest music festivals. The lower town is a cluster of Baroque churches and cobbled lanes still lived in as a small neighbourhood.

The upper terrace and the clock tower are free to visit and give the postcard view of Novi Sad across the river.
