Serbian National Theatre (SNP)

Srpsko narodno pozorište (SNP) was founded in Novi Sad in 1861 — decades before the National Theatre in Belgrade — and remains the leading Serbian-language theatre in the country. The current concrete-and-glass building on Pozorišni trg opened in 1981, replacing a hall destroyed in WWII.

The programme runs drama, opera and ballet across three stages, with an emphasis on Serbian classics and translated European drama. Tickets are astonishingly cheap by European standards (400–1500 RSD) and often sell out the same day.

Even if you don't catch a show, the plaza in front is a good landmark for orienting yourself between Freedom Square and the river.
