History

The Flavian emperors built Rome's great amphitheater on land reclaimed from Nero's private palace. Vespasian began it around AD 72, Titus inaugurated it in AD 80, and Domitian added the uppermost work and underground service spaces. Its original name was the Flavian Amphitheater; “Colosseum” probably came from the colossal statue of Nero that once stood nearby. Tens of thousands of spectators entered through numbered arches and sat according to status. Gladiatorial combats, animal hunts, executions, and elaborate staged spectacles turned imperial power into public theater.

Earthquakes, stone theft, and changing uses stripped away much of the outer ring. Medieval families fortified parts of it, workshops occupied the arcades, and popes later treated the building as a Christian memorial. Modern archaeology exposed the hypogeum, the maze of corridors, lifts, and cages beneath the lost arena floor. The monument is now the anchor of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo and one of the world's most visited archaeological sites. Arrive before the timed slot and examine the surviving north side from across the piazza; it preserves the complete height and makes the missing southern ring legible.

Did you know

  • The hypogeum is the answer to one of the most useful details to remember on site.
  • The four stacked architectural levels, with column styles changing as the façade rises.
  • Numbered entrance arches that once directed spectators efficiently to their seats.

Architecture and details

Read the monument from a distance first, then move close enough to separate original fabric from repairs and later reuse. Changes in stone color, carving depth and blocked openings often explain more than a single frontal view. At Colosseum, compare these broad choices with the specific materials, openings and proportions described on site.

What to look for

  • Numbered entrance arches that once directed spectators efficiently to their seats.
  • The exposed hypogeum beneath the missing arena floor.
  • Holes in the stone where metal clamps were removed and reused.
