History

Trevi marks the monumental end of the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct first completed in 19 BC and still supplying water to central Rome through its later successor. Pope Clement XII held a design competition in 1732; Nicola Salvi won, shaping the fountain as the façade of Palazzo Poli and turning a cramped square into a stone theater. Work continued after Salvi's death and was completed in 1762 under Giuseppe Pannini.

At the center, Oceanus rides a shell chariot pulled by two sea horses—one calm, one unruly—guided by Tritons. Side figures represent Abundance and Health, while reliefs refer to the aqueduct's legendary discovery and papal reconstruction. Water moves across an artificial cliff before filling the broad basin, masking the noise of surrounding streets.

Cinema amplified the fountain's fame, especially Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. The coin-toss ritual now helps generate funds collected for charity, but entering the water is prohibited. From February 2, 2026, Rome introduced a €2 ticket for tourists and nonresidents entering the controlled area closest to the basin during scheduled hours; the larger square remains freely viewable. Come before 8:00 a.m. for space, or late at night for illuminated stone without pretending the crowd will disappear completely.

Changes in stone color, carving depth and blocked openings often explain more than a single frontal view. At Trevi Fountain, compare these broad choices with the specific materials, openings and proportions described on site.
