Which cardinal began the great Borghese garden in 1606?

Rome's central landscape park combines shaded paths, museums, gardens and viewpoints above the historic core.
Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and one of Baroque Rome's most energetic collectors, began transforming vineyards outside the city walls into a suburban villa in 1606. Architects Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio helped shape the casino and formal grounds, while sculptures, fountains, and carefully staged views advertised the family's wealth and taste. The main casino later became the Galleria Borghese.
The estate changed with fashion. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, parts of the rigid garden were remade in the looser English landscape style. The Borghese family sold the property to the Italian state in 1901, and it passed to the City of Rome and opened as a public park in 1903. Roads once intended for carriages now carry walkers, bicycles, family pedal carts, and the occasional service vehicle.
At roughly 80 hectares, it is large enough to absorb crowds from the nearby Spanish Steps. The park includes the boating lake and Temple of Aesculapius, Casa del Cinema, Bioparco, museums, playgrounds, and quiet lawns. Rome's municipal parks follow seasonal gate hours, though principal paths have broad daily access. For this walk, do not try to “complete” it. Follow the western carriage roads toward Pincio and watch the canopy open into the city's grandest sunset terrace.
Follow the main axis once, then step onto a side path. Planting, shade, terraces and sightlines reveal how the landscape was designed for movement rather than a single photograph. At Villa Borghese Gardens, compare these broad choices with the specific materials, openings and proportions described on site.
The public park is free. Municipal garden gates follow seasonal opening schedules, generally from early morning until evening; hours can vary by entrance and event. Main roads are broad and mostly accessible, but slopes, gravel, and uneven surfaces occur. Bikes and pedal carts are rented inside; keep to pedestrian sides on busy weekends. Access checked 2026-10-07. Follow the western carriage roads toward Pincio and watch the canopy open into the city's grandest sunset terrace.
