History

The Vittoriano was conceived after Italian unification as a national monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy. Giuseppe Sacconi won the design competition, and work began in 1885 on the northern slope of the Capitoline. The project required major demolition in a dense historic district, a reminder that modern nation-building reshaped ancient Rome as aggressively as some emperors had.

The monument's broad stairways, Corinthian colonnade, fountains, and pale Botticino marble created a deliberately theatrical stage above Piazza Venezia. Enrico Chiaradia's equestrian statue of the king dominates the center. In 1921, the body of Italy's Unknown Soldier was placed beneath the goddess Roma, guarded continuously and marked by an eternal flame. That addition shifted the complex from a royal monument toward a broader site of national remembrance.

Romans have long supplied irreverent nicknames—“wedding cake” and “typewriter”—but the building now houses the Central Museum of the Risorgimento and exhibition spaces under the VIVE administration. The upper terrace has one of the clearest 360-degree views in central Rome. Climb the free stairways first and look back toward the straight line of Via del Corso; the axis makes the monument's urban ambition immediately obvious.

Did you know

  • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the answer to one of the most useful details to remember on site.
  • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its two permanent guards.
  • The enormous equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II.

Architecture and details

Read the monument from a distance first, then move close enough to separate original fabric from repairs and later reuse. Changes in stone color, carving depth and blocked openings often explain more than a single frontal view. At Vittoriano, compare these broad choices with the specific materials, openings and proportions described on site.

What to look for

  • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its two permanent guards.
  • The enormous equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II.
  • Twin fountains symbolizing the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas.
  • The rooftop view over the Forum, Capitoline, and domes of central Rome.
