Arena di Verona

Standing proudly in Piazza Bra, the Arena di Verona is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Older than Rome’s Colosseum, this massive pink-limestone monument has been the beating heart of the city for over two thousand years. Whether you're admiring its grand outer arches from a outdoor café or exploring the ancient stone steps inside, it is an absolute must-see highlight of Verona.

History

Built around 30 AD, the Arena actually predates Rome's Colosseum by nearly 50 years. In ancient times, it could hold over 30,000 spectators who gathered to watch gladiator battles, public spectacles, and wild beast hunts. In 1117, a massive earthquake struck the region, destroying most of the Arena's outer ring and leaving only a four-arch section intact—known locally as the Ala ("Wing").

The monument underwent a spectacular rebirth in 1913 when it hosted a historic production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. The incredible natural acoustics proved so legendary that the ancient stadium was transformed into the world’s premiere open-air opera venue, welcoming thousands of visitors under the stars every summer.
