History
Long before it became the city’s favorite photo op, this hilltop was a highly strategic stronghold. The Romans were the first to claim it, building a temple to watch over the river crossing below. In the 14th century, the ruling Visconti family erected a massive medieval castle on the site, which was later destroyed by Napoleon's troops. The imposing, fortress-like building you see standing behind the terrace today is actually a 19th-century Austrian military barracks, built in the 1850s. The soldiers are long gone, leaving behind the perfect panoramic balcony for modern travelers.
