Strolling across the bridge’s defensive ramps gives you an incredible, breezy vantage point over the rushing Adige River and the city's ancient architecture. History
Built in 1354 by the powerful Scaliger family, Castelvecchio (literally "Old Castle") was designed as a heavy military fortress to protect Verona from outside threats—and to provide a secure escape route across the river for the ruling family in case the locals rebelled. Fast forward to World War II: retreating German troops completely blew up the bridge in 1945. What you walk on today is a testament to Italian resilience; in 1951, determined locals meticulously rebuilt the bridge by hand, using the original red bricks salvaged directly from the riverbed below.
