History

Designed in the late 16th century by Agostino Giusti, an influential knight of the Venetian Republic, this garden was created as a grand, manicured backdrop for the Giusti family estate. Over the centuries, its symmetrical beauty attracted historic luminaries, including Mozart, Cosimo III de' Medici, and Wolfgang von Goethe. Designed in true Renaissance fashion to balance art and nature, the garden features a famous cliffside stone face (mascherone) and a top lookout terrace that Goethe famously praised in his travel journals as having one of the best views in Italy.
