History
The square gets its name from the Lombard word braida, meaning a broad, open field—which is precisely what this space was during the Middle Ages, sitting just outside the city’s ancient Roman walls. It wasn't until the 16th and 17th centuries that the area transformed into a grand civic center with the addition of the Portoni della Bra gateway arches and majestic palaces like the Gran Guardia. In 1770, the city laid down the Liston—the wide pink-marble pavement along the western edge—creating one of Italy’s very first dedicated promenades built specifically for social strolling and evening drinks.
