About the tour
Why walk Rome this way
Start near Termini and let Monti reveal Rome vertically: early Christian mosaics, Michelangelo, underground churches and finally the Colosseum.
This route is for travelers who have seen the postcard list—or want a more revealing way to approach one famous monument. Begin beside Termini at Santa Maria Maggiore's mosaic layers, drop into Monti for Michelangelo's Moses, descend literally through time at San Clemente, and finish as the Colosseum appears at the end of the street. The line is mostly downhill, but stairways around San Pietro in Vincoli and underground steps at San Clemente matter. Two hours 15 minutes assumes short church visits and a reserved excavation slot; entering the Colosseum afterward makes this a half-day. San Clemente's upper basilica has major scaffolding through mid-2027, but the underground levels remain compelling. For coffee, use a bar around Via Urbana between the first two stops. The route begins a manageable walk from Termini and ends at Metro B, so it works well on an arrival or departure day without retracing steps.
On this walk you'll:
- See Basilica of Saint Mary Major
- See San Pietro in Vincoli
- See Basilica of San Clemente

Stop 1 of 4
Basilica of Saint Mary Major
Enter after security and keep your eyes at clerestory level. The small fifth-century mosaics along the nave are the oldest layer, easily overwhelmed by the gilded ceiling and Baroque chapels. Walk toward the apse to see Torriti's medieval gold mosaic, then turn back toward the entrance. The long column lines make the early basilica's geometry survive every later addition.

Tips
Good to know before you go
Places to stop along the way
- Coffee bar on Via Urbana
Best time of day
Start after 9:00 a.m. so all churches are open, avoiding the midday closure at San Pietro in Vincoli and San Clemente.
Precautions
Religious services take priority. San Clemente excavation tickets require online booking; underground steps are damp and uneven. Restrooms are available with the San Clemente ticket and at paid Colosseum facilities. Monti has frequent cafés around Via Urbana and Via dei Serpenti. The street route can avoid major stairs with detours, but San Clemente's excavations are not wheelchair accessible. Church thresholds and steep Monti grades require care.
