Stop 1 of 10
Arena di Verona
Before Rome had the Colosseum, Verona had the Arena. Built in the 1st century from local marble, it is one of the best-preserved ancient structures in the world. Today, it’s not just a ruin—it’s a living venue hosting legendary summer operas. Take a moment to walk its massive perimeter before diving into the maze of the city.

Arena di Verona
Standing proudly in Piazza Bra, the Arena di Verona is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Older than Rome’s Colosseum, this massive pink-limestone monument has been the beating heart of the city for over two thousand years. Whether you're admiring its grand outer arches from a outdoor café or exploring the ancient stone steps inside, it is an absolute must-see highlight of Verona.
Free entry - 2
Castelvecchio (Museo di Castelvecchio)
A red-brick fortress on the river that the Scaligeri built to protect themselves from their own citizens. Inside, 29 rooms of medieval and Renaissance art — but the real masterpiece is the building itself, reworked in the 1960s by architect Carlo Scarpa in what's still considered one of the greatest museum redesigns ever done.
Paid · €6.00 adult, Free under 7 and with VeronaCard - 3
Ponte Scaligero (Castelvecchio Bridge)
The fortified escape route the Scaligeri built onto the back of their castle, and still the most photogenic crossing in Verona. Walk it at sunset, when the red brick and the swallowtail battlements go gold over the green water.
Free entry - 4
Via Giuseppe Mazzini
This is Verona’s version of 5th Avenue. Connecting the Arena directly to Juliet's neighborhood, Via Mazzini is the city's most prestigious shopping street. But the real luxury isn't just in the boutique windows—it's right under your feet. The entire street is paved with stunning rosso di Verona marble, making it the most elegant stroll you’ll take in Italy.
Free entry - 5
Casa di Giulietta
No trip to Verona is complete without paying homage to Shakespeare’s famous star-crossed lovers. Step through the stone archway into the courtyard to take in the iconic 14th-century balcony and the famous bronze statue of Juliet. Rich in storybook charm and timeless romance, this legendary spot is a mandatory rite of passage in the City of Love.
Paid · €15-22, childer under 5 free, FREE WITH VERONA CARD (booking required) - 6
Piazza delle Erbe
You are standing in what used to be the ancient Roman Forum, now transformed into Verona’s lively outdoor market. This is the true beating heart of the city. While browsing the market stalls is fun, the real magic is above eye level. Look up at the Case Mazzanti to see vibrant, centuries-old frescoes painted directly onto the building facades.
Free entry - 7
Torre dei Lamberti
Dominating Verona's skyline since the 12th century, this medieval watchtower is an architectural compass for the city. From its alternating brick base to its octagonal marble crown, it offers an incredible vantage point to gaze down over the lively markets of Piazza delle Erbe and the winding Adige River.
Paid · 4.5-6€, CHILDREN 0-7 YEARS FREE - 8
Piazza dei Signori
If Piazza delle Erbe was the market, this was the government. A quieter, more formal square ringed by the palaces that actually ran Verona, with Dante standing in the middle looking mildly unimpressed. The best coffee-with-a-view stop on any route through the centre.
Free entry - 9
Complesso del Duomo di Verona (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Matricolare)
Not one church but a layered complex: the Romanesque cathedral, the baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, the early-Christian church of Santa Elena, and a cloister with 4th-century mosaic floors under your feet. There's a Titian on the wall of the first chapel on the left.
Paid · €4.00 single church, free with VeronaCard - 10
Ponte Pietra
Spanning the rushing Adige River, Ponte Pietra is Verona’s most iconic pedestrian bridge. With its patchwork of white Roman stone and warm medieval red brick, it connects the old town to the cypress-lined hills across the river. It’s an essential, scenic spot to pause, take in the river breeze, and capture gorgeous photos of the cityscape.

Tips
Good to know before you go
Best time of day
Start at 9:00 AM. The market in Piazza delle Erbe is setting up, the Arena has no queue, and you reach Ponte Pietra before midday glare flattens the river view. The alternative is a 3:00 PM start, which finishes at the bridge in golden light — but check the Duomo's closing time first, and expect Juliet's courtyard to be at its most crowded.
Precautions
Avoid starting between 11:00 and 2:00 in July and August. Piazza Bra has no shade and the marble radiates heat.
