About the tour
Why walk Verona this way
Verona sells itself on romance, and most of that marketing points at one balcony. This walk takes the promise seriously and delivers something better: a route timed to the light, ending above the whole city at the exact moment it turns gold.
You start in Piazza Bra two hours before sunset, when the Arena's limestone has gone warm and the cafés along the Listón are filling up. From there you walk out to the Castelvecchio bridge and cross it slowly, because the swallowtail battlements frame the river in a way that has been photographing well since long before anyone had a phone.
Back through Via Mazzini as the marble starts to glow and the evening promenade begins — this is when Verona is most itself, the whole city out walking for no reason other than to be seen doing it. Then the two squares, Erbe and Signori, one noisy and frescoed, one quiet and formal with Dante watching from the middle. Juliet's courtyard comes next, and it is better at this hour: emptier, softer, and the letters on the wall look less like a gimmick in low light.
You cross the Adige on Ponte Pietra, Roman and two thousand years old, and climb the last stretch to Castel San Pietro. Take the steps if you're able — the funicular is faster but arriving on foot is the better ending. Then you stand on the terrace with the river bending below you and watch the light go. Three kilometres, two hours, and one very good last twenty minutes.

Stop 1 of 7
Arena di Verona
Begin under an open sky. In late afternoon the Arena's pink limestone holds the warmth of the day and the Listón — the wide marble pavement along the west side of the square — fills with people doing nothing in particular. That's the mood for the whole walk. If you're doing this properly, get a spritz at one of the cafés and don't rush the first twenty minutes.

Arena di Verona
Standing proudly in Piazza Bra, the Arena di Verona is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Older than Rome’s Colosseum, this massive pink-limestone monument has been the beating heart of the city for over two thousand years. Whether you're admiring its grand outer arches from a outdoor café or exploring the ancient stone steps inside, it is an absolute must-see highlight of Verona.
Free entry - 2
Ponte Scaligero (Castelvecchio Bridge)
The fortified escape route the Scaligeri built onto the back of their castle, and still the most photogenic crossing in Verona. Walk it at sunset, when the red brick and the swallowtail battlements go gold over the green water.
Free entry - 3
Via Giuseppe Mazzini
This is Verona’s version of 5th Avenue. Connecting the Arena directly to Juliet's neighborhood, Via Mazzini is the city's most prestigious shopping street. But the real luxury isn't just in the boutique windows—it's right under your feet. The entire street is paved with stunning rosso di Verona marble, making it the most elegant stroll you’ll take in Italy.
Free entry - 4
Piazza delle Erbe
You are standing in what used to be the ancient Roman Forum, now transformed into Verona’s lively outdoor market. This is the true beating heart of the city. While browsing the market stalls is fun, the real magic is above eye level. Look up at the Case Mazzanti to see vibrant, centuries-old frescoes painted directly onto the building facades.
Free entry - 5
Casa di Giulietta
No trip to Verona is complete without paying homage to Shakespeare’s famous star-crossed lovers. Step through the stone archway into the courtyard to take in the iconic 14th-century balcony and the famous bronze statue of Juliet. Rich in storybook charm and timeless romance, this legendary spot is a mandatory rite of passage in the City of Love.

Ponte Pietra
Spanning the rushing Adige River, Ponte Pietra is Verona’s most iconic pedestrian bridge. With its patchwork of white Roman stone and warm medieval red brick, it connects the old town to the cypress-lined hills across the river. It’s an essential, scenic spot to pause, take in the river breeze, and capture gorgeous photos of the cityscape.
Free entry - 7
Castel San Pietro
After winding your way up the scenic steps or riding the funicular, you are rewarded with the undisputed best view in Verona. This sprawling terrace stretches out in front of an imposing fortress, offering an unobstructed, red-roofed panorama of the winding Adige river and the city's historic towers. It’s the grand finale of your walk and the premier location to snap unforgettable photos as the city glows in the late afternoon sun.

Tips
Good to know before you go
Best time of day
Start two hours before sunset. In practice that's roughly 5:00 PM in spring and autumn, 7:00 PM in midsummer, and 3:30 PM in December — set the tour card to calculate from local sunset rather than a fixed clock time if your system can
Precautions
Aim to be at the top thirty minutes early in summer. The wall fills up, and the spots with a clear line down to Ponte Pietra go first.
